You have heard of the five senses.  Today let’s experience the sense of smell.  Each person has a unique sense of smell, like their fingerprints which are unique.  The correct word for sense of smell is olfaction.  Olfaction is the process of detecting chemicals floating in the air.  They enter the nose and dissolve in the mucous membrane called the olfactory epithelium.  This is located about 7 cm up into the nose.  We humans have around 40 million olfactory receptors.  Next, the olfactory bulb recognizes each smell molecule as it is fit into a nerve cell like a lock and key.  From there the cells send signals along the olfactory nerve to the brain.  Here the brain interprets these smells.  The brain is involved with emotions and memory.  Our sense of smell is connected to our memory, and can bring back good or bad memories and evoke certain emotions.  We have 7 primary odors that help us determine objects.  They are: camphoric like mothballs, musky like perfume or aftershave, roses like floral, pepperminty like mint gum, etheral like dry cleaning fluid, pungent like vinegar and putrid like rotten eggs.  Some people have a medical condition called anosmia that means they have no sense of smell.  Around 2 million people have this condition in the U.S.

Now that we see how the sense of smell influences our lives, we can appreciate the benefits of picking the correct fragrances of soy candles.  Depending on your emotions or mood at the time, you might decide on an entirely different fragrance than what you usually would choose.  Maybe you are needing a stress reliever, or you need extra energy, or you want more passion in your life.  Fragrance can be a wonderful mood lifter with its functioning on our sense of smell.

Soy candles are a wonderful way to enhance your sense of smell.  They can be found in many different fragrances and even come in aromatherapy.  Want to bring back happy memories, try choosing the soy candle fragrance to match the memory.  Happy fragrance hunting as you choose your soy candles.
